Zohran for New York City
Mamdani is elected. Now, what does that mean, what does that stand for? It is out of my league of knowledge to talk about whether the world is leaning toward left or right in the new world order however I think it is naive to believe it to be left just because Mamdani succeeded in the election race . 2025, on the other hand was the year of people-led protests with Belgrade anti-government protests, Turkish protests after İmamoğlu got arrested, Malagasy and Nepal Gen Z Protests, pro-Palestine walks and many other. So, there is hope.
Mamdani stands for what is public and to be able to do that in the U.S. shows great courage; above all that it shows people cannot stand some of the political patterns that got us all here. With the campaign he conducted he gained support from the “underdogs” of the story; now revenging what had made them the “underdogs”. I am not sure if I love the term though - considering now 38% of New York’s population are immigrants - and at the core America is all about being an “immigrant” country. Therefore, it is a reckless, mindless thing to call 38% of population, economy and power a “minority” now. Let alone the immigrant population of the city - New York stands out with its long history of human rights, providing a different aspect of the “American Dream” where you can find people like you no matter what.
It used to be that - at least I think at the surface and what I have grown in to - New York would never let you starve and you would find anything to do there; here the unemployment and homelessness rates contradict each other greatly - with 4.9% unemployment rate and the 103,391 homeless people according to August 2025 data. Here is where Mamdani comes into the picture: maybe for the first time in history of United States of America he offers a solution and takes it seriously as a humanitarian problem.
I don’t want to turn this into a magazine spot but it is impossible for me to not mention Rama Duwaji, “the mind behind all that” according to the general press. Hate to say it but I am not for the “there is a woman behind all successful men” kind of story. Rama and Zohran pose as a power couple where they collaborate and support each other; not one standing before one but standing next to each other. I say, a perfect representation for what New York, politics and 21st century should stand for.
